This evaluation is a collaborative process.
How we can help:
An Comprehensive Oral Evaluation may include these services:
- Dental X-rays
- Comprehensive exam- evaluation of all your teeth
- Head and Neck exam
- Occlusal/ bite analysis
- digital/ oral photos
- Diagnostic cast
- Review of Findings
Dental cleanings will reduce your potential for tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, plaque produces a foul odor, so when it’s removed, your breath should be fresher. If your gums are red, tender, swollen, or if they bleed when you brush your teeth, you may have gum disease.
How we can help: To keep teeth and gums healthy, you need a dental cleaning, or hygiene visit, every six months. At this appointment, the dental hygienist will assess your gum tissue, record the findings, and determine what type of cleaning is beneficial for you. Not all patients are eligible for a “regular” cleaning. Depending on the gum tissue assessment; we provide treatments to accommodate your dental cleaning needs.
Periodontal “Gum” Therapy
‘Periodontal’ refers to gums, the soft pink skin that supports teeth and covers bones in the mouth. About 80 percent of American adults have gum disease, a bacterial infection that breaks down the bond between gums and teeth. Gum disease has serious overall health implications in that it is associated with increased potential for:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Diabetes complications
- Heart attack/heart disease
- Low-weight births
- Respiratory problems
- Tooth loss
How we can help: Depending on your level of gum disease, our hygienist and Dr. Lam will recommend the appropriate therapy. If you have mild gingivitis, changing your oral home care routine could solve the problem. However, a deeper cleaning is often recommended for mild to moderate gum disease. This procedure involves scaling to remove hardened plaque (tartar or calculus) from below the gum line and root planing to reduce rough areas on your teeth’s roots where bacteria tend to gather and flourish. Advanced gum disease cases may be referred to a periodontist. In some cases, surgery may be required.
Gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss for adults in the US. If you show signs of gum disease, the hygienist will recommend “Gum Therapy” to remove plaque below the gum line. Some patients benefit from special mouth rinses, antibiotic therapy, or habit changes to reduce gum disease. Regular maintenance visits are required to keep gums healthy and strong.
